A Fairytale Wedding

A Great Gatsby-Inspired Black-Tie Affair | June 2015

Calla and Kyle are absolutely smitten with each other. That much is apparent in the sweet way they describe one another, as well as how they interact. I should know—Kyle is my

step-brother. Kyle is hard-working and extremely thoughtful—he is always putting others first. Calla is hilarious, unapologetic and deeply caring. Both are incredibly family-oriented and they fit together perfectly.

When they asked me to create a wedding invitation suite that was simple and elegant for their glamorous black-tie wedding, I was so excited. Calla is an English teacher and her love of literature led me straight to The Great Gatsby vibe. I thought of all the elaborate parties in the book and the 1920s glitz and I pictured their wedding as an equally extravagant affair. The wedding took place at Morais Vineyards in Virginia—a gorgeous, sprawling estate absolutely perfect for a “Hollywood glam” themed wedding.

To be honest, I was sort of shocked when Calla and Kyle asked me to do their wedding invitations, because both of them are VERY Type A and super hands-on and I just assumed Calla would want to handle it herself. I should take it as a compliment in itself that she trusted me to not only create the invitations, but also the save the dates – and to do so with very little art direction from her. That’s right, she let me take my art deco, Great Gatsby theme and run with it.

The result was a simple black and gold invitation suite fit for a modern day party of epic proportions. I used a printing technique of raised gold ink, giving it texture. The entire suite was printed on a shimmery pearlescent paper and backed on a black matte pocket card.

Overall, they were both thrilled with the final invitation design! Here's a note from Calla:

"I have two framed wedding invitations in my home, one downstairs and one upstairs. I see them every day and they bring me such joy, as they remind me of one of the best days of my life, the day I got to marry my best friend. As a Type A woman, I wanted to control everything to do with my big day. Quite literally, the only things I felt comfortable relinquishing control of were my save-the-dates and my wedding invitations. I knew Jordan would do a phenomenal job. Her meticulous attention to detail, willingness to listen to all of my (numerous) concerns, and creative approach to my “Hollywood Glam” theme put me at ease. I was so beyond thrilled with the work that she did, I recommended her to my friends and used her services again for my son’s baptismal announcement. She will always be my go-to person for all things graphic design-related."

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
